Today we’re going to explore the wondrous Don Pedro. Now before you ask, no, we’re not talking about the Prince of Aragon from Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Instead, we’re talking about the other Don Pedro: a quintessentially South African treat. For those not in the know, a Don Pedro is a cocktail/dessert hybrid and the perfect antidote to hot spring and summer nights.

Essentially a Don Pedro is a spiked milkshake. Recipes vary but most contain a combination of ice cream, cream or milk, and alcohol. The drink was first made in a South African restaurant in the 1970; since then it’s become a firm favourite among the local population, at least among those above drinking age!

The most important decision you’ll need to make when preparing your own Don Pedro is which alcohol to pick. The original drink was made with Scottish whiskey after the creator, Danny Ferris, whilst on a distillery tour in the Highlands, poured some whiskey over ice cream. While whiskey is the classic choice, most commonly Don Pedro’s are made with cream-based liquors that complement the creamy textures and flavors of ice cream. Popular spirits include Kahlúa, Frangelico, and Amaretto. However, for a uniquely South African taste, try making one with Amarula.

How to make your own Don Pedro:

  • 2 1/2 cups of vanilla ice cream
  • 1/2 cup cream (you can also use half and half or whole milk)
  • 1 or 2 shots of alcohol
  • Grated chocolate or syrup to garnish

Method

Combine the ice cream, cream, alcohol in a blender. Mix until the drink has a thick milkshake consistency. Either line the inside of the glass with chocolate syrup before pouring in the mixture, or sprinkle some chocolate shavings over the top. Enjoy!
