The five best podcasts you’ve never heard of

Do you love podcasts? I know I do! I’m always on the lookout (or earout?) for the next audio experience on par with Serial or Radiolab. While there are literally thousands of podcasts out there to appeal to any number of tastes, it can be difficult to figure out which ones are worth my time. Sure, we’ve all heard of This American Life or WTF with Marc Maron, but what about the great podcasts that fall under the radar? Here are five of the best podcasts you’ve (probably) never heard of:

I Was There Too

This is a great one for film buffs. Matt Gourley of Superego interviews actors who played minor roles in classic scenes from famous movies. Far from being another celebrity yack fest, Gourley’s podcast reframes legendary movie scene as completely relatable human experiences. Whether it be comedian Paul F. Tomkins’ experience working with Daniel Day Lewis, or Ahmed Best reassessing his much maligned role as Jar Jar Binks in the Star Wars Prequels, I Was There Too turns mythology into fascinating reality.

Sawbones

Maximum Fun

Hypochondriacs might want to give this one a miss. Sawbones is a journey through the ghastly and fascinating history of illness and medicine. In case that sounds a bit grim it’s worth noting that this is a comedy podcast and a very funny one at that. Hosted by married couple Dr. Sydnee McElroy and Justin McElroy (co-host of My Brother, My Brother, and Me), Sawbones is both hilariously funny and truly educational.

In the Dark

APM Reports

If your still looking for the next podcast to fill the Serial sized hole in your life, In The Dark is worth a listen. In The Dark looks into the abduction case of a young boy in Minnesota. Unlike Serial which is at it’s core a whodunnit, In The Dark is more interested in exploring the way that tragedy affects those caught up in it’s wake and the way that society’s systems can fail. In The Dark is tough to listen to at times but worth the effort.

The Bugle

The Bugle

This satirical Podcast from across the pond regularly featured (until recently) none other than Last Week Tonight host John Oliver. This extremely British podcast takes a satirical bite out of the latest political news. Sadly, Oliver had the leave the podcast due to his TV duties, but co-host Andy Zaltzman has keep the show going with his usual acerbic wit.

Song Exploder

Song Exploder

Each episode of Song Exploder is a deep dive into the various aspects that make up a single song. Host Hrishikesh Hirway invites musicians to break down the creative process that resulted in the song in question. Throughout discussions regarding the songs influences, aims, and creation we get to hear isolated tracks of the songs various instruments or vocal parts. It’s a fascinating, beautifully produced exploration of the creative process.
