This all-American throwback sandwich popped up in the midwest in the 1930s, becoming a staple of lunch counters and home kitchens alike. There’s a reason Sloppy Joes have remained popular for so long: kids love them and they are a cinch to whip up. This recipe also uses pantry staples, so you may have everything you need to make this delicious recipe on hand right now. This recipe makes great leftovers so make sure you save some for lunch tomorrow!

Note: If you would like to schedule this cook, but do not want to wait for the broiler to cool before refrigerating, sauté the beef, 1 tsp salt, olive oil, bell pepper, onion, and garlic in a large skillet over high heat for 10 minutes instead of broiling.

During the cook, prepare the coleslaw. In a large bowl whisk together the apple cider vinegar and 1 tsp brown sugar until dissolved. Add mayo and whisk to combine.

Add coleslaw mix and stir to combine. Add salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

After the cook, remove pan from Suvie.

Place each bun on a plate, divide sloppy joes between the four buns. Serve with a scoop of coleslaw and enjoy!

To make this recipe on the stovetop, heat olive oil in a large skillet until shimmering. Add the ground beef, bell pepper, onion, and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally until beef is cooked through, about 8 minutes, mashing beef slightly. Drain excess oil from skillet and stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder; season to taste with salt and pepper. In a large bowl whisk together the apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp brown sugar, and mayonnaise until smooth. Stir in coleslaw mix. Divide beef between hamburger buns and top with coleslaw. Serve.

Note: If you would like to make this recipe in Suvie 1.0, insert pan into the top zone of Suvie, fill reservoir, and set to Slow Cook on High for 2 hours.

Wine Pairing

Rich, meaty, no-nonsense meals like Sloppy Joe’s require a bold and robust wine to match. We recommend a glass of punchy Malbec.
