These beautiful golden orange berries are sure to make any meal pop! Prized by chefs around the globe, cloudberries are known for their beautifully balanced sweet and sour flavor as well as their scarcity. Also known as bakeapples, yellowberries, and salmonberries, the majority of cloudberries come from Canada, Russia, Scandinavia, and Alaska and are harvested by means of foraging. As they are not yet commercially grown, these bubbly looking berries may not be easy to find in local grocery stores, so search for tasty cloudberry treats such as preserves and liqueurs online.

Flavor and Texture of Cloudberries

With small seeds and a slightly chewy bite, cloudberries have a texture similar to that of blackberries. Yet, as the fruit continues to ripen, the consistency changes to more of a creamy texture. In terms of taste, the natural sugars and acidity in the berries create a sweet and tart flavor, making it a perfect accompaniment to savory dishes or dessert.

Storage and Usage of Cloudberries

For fresh cloudberries, store in the refrigerator in a vented container to reduce moisture. Leave the berries unwashed until ready to eat as excess water will cause mold to grow. For maximum freshness, eat within three days of purchasing. To keep cloudberries for an extended period of time, freeze in a single layer and transfer to a freezer bag where they will keep for up to two years.

While it may be hard to pick up fresh cloudberries, try making our Sweet and Spicy Pork Chops with cloudberry preserves. Start your morning with a burst of Scandinavian flavor by adding some to our Cheese Danish or Stuffed French Toast.  If you’re looking for an exciting and creamy dessert to wrap up a delicious meal, try using cloudberries in our Jammy Cheesecake for a tart pop of flavor and color.
